Here—chucking this little Halloween-themed snippet of Tharsis, MN at the Mars House tag because this chapter’s probably not getting released for at least a year. Better late than never, right?
January looked up as Max came through the doorway—in completely normal office kit, he noticed. “Well, that’s unsporting. Where’s your spirit of the season?” January himself had been the most committed; the office was strangely joyless for it being Halloween. Even he was only wearing cat ears and eyeliner whiskers.
“It’s not unsporting.” Max said, completely deadpan. “I’m a motorcycle lawyer.”
January blinked at them, thrown. “Sorry, a what?”
“Surely you’ve seen the billboards on the highway—Lawyers Who Ride?” Max sighed, flipping their phone around to show January something. Indeed; there, on the cracked screen of Max’s phone, was a copy of the adverts plastered along I-94. A pair of men stood astride a motorcycle, both wearing leather jackets over collared shirts and ties; just like Max.
January had to spend a few seconds buffering. “This country just gets weirder and weirder the longer I’m here.”
“Tell me about it.” Max said, with just the barest hint of a laugh.
Just then, an intern appeared near January’s elbow. “Do you need some coffee, Mr. Stirling?” they inquired.
January started. “Suffering Christ, Voronsky. Don’t you have school today?”
Voronsky shrugged, bouncing on the tips of their toes. They were dressed as Ms. Frizzle, down to a stuffed lizard perched on their shoulder. “Senator Gale sprung me. All hands on deck, I suppose.”
Speak of the devil—River rounded the corner, then. “Good morning, everyone!”
January raised an eyebrow. “Morning. You know you can’t have the interns skip school for the campaign, right? They need an education.”
River laughed. “I absolutely can—it’s in the handbook. Besides, what’s more edifying than a hands-on experience of our electoral system?”

“ Been speaking to several London frontline doctors working in major hospitals. Picture isn’t great. One: “it’s a bit like a warzone. I’d say not far off where we were at in first wave in terms of capacity. But staff are completely demoralised and exhausted this time round.”
Another: “It’s all pretty grim. Over 50% inpatients are covid cases. But no beds free. Supplies holding up well so far. Staff sickness a risk. Elective [procedures] stopped last week but it’s too late.”
Another member of staff from a London hospital: “Things are a mess. Treatment in ambulances, oxygen ran out the other day. It’s horrid. The whole hospital is full of Covid. This is worse than the 1st wave and is going to get worse because the public don’t realise how bad it is.”
The thing I’ve heard repeatedly, from dozens of people working in hospitals, is that the thing making the situation now so much worse is a) severe staff absence which is partly driven itself by Covid but as much by b) profound levels of mental and physical exhaustion.

Consider the psychological toll of that. The word I keep hearing is burnout.
I’m told a major London hospital has told its senior medical staff to brace themselves for the peak in admissions which they believe still won’t come for another fortnight.
I’m also told that in one London hospital, psychiatric nurses and other mental health staff have been redeployed to provide support to staff on ICU. One staff member tells me:
“Nurses are walking off the wards in tears, some have resigned. They are dealing with PTSD from the multiple traumatic deaths they are witnessing and then having to go back for more. We need everyone to be more cautious. People need to avoid mixing and stay at home. We can’t take much more of this.”
From an anaesthetist at a London hospital: “At various points over the Xmas wkend every CPAP machine (assists breathing, often used to see if patient can cope without intubation, sedation and ventilation) was in use across entire trust. This is a very bad situation to be in.”
“ITU is being covered partly by nurses who are NOT trained in ITU nursing. In some instances paediatric nurses. Many of these people are doing a great job under almost impossible circumstances. But they are not trained for this.”
“The wards are completely overloaded with covid patients. Every night was worse, every night trying to work out how many we could take to to ITU and who would have to cope on the ward for longer.”
“Morale is very low. We all feel the government is continually since April about 2-4 weeks behind what is obvious on the ground.
Anaesthesia and intensive care doctors are getting desperate text messages to help with hospitals that are at the epicentre - East London.”
To add some empirical context to these experiences consider a few things 1) NHS had been increasingly struggling in winter before 2) A&E wait times have been getting worse for yrs 3) staff shortages were a problem per-pandemic- eg we went into this with 40,000 nursing vacancies.
This is why the Nightingales aren’t being used. Because there just aren’t enough staff to fill them.
In the spring we rode it out because a) it was spring and b) staff were fresher. 9 months on they are physically and mentally spent and it’s winter. They’re pushing water uphill.
The fact that winter would be so bad for the NHS was predictable and predicted. It’s why people like Andrew Heyward said in Nov that Xmas relaxation would add fuel to the fire. It’s also why some public health experts said that early December return to the tiers was a mistake....

Winter! Even if I’ve never experienced snow or winter before, the whole idea of snow is just really fun and endearing to me. One of my bucketlists is to see snow in real life. I think it has to do with the fact that I’ve always been this person to prefer the cold over heat.

I’ve always been here! Just not in kpop tumblr. I’ve since deleted my old accounts and shame but i came back to write. It’s always been so stress-relieving to me, to write without any expectations on my back because I’m thinking about grades or a competition. Also Soobin simping is a daily thing and I gotta release it somewhere man
are you happy with where you are in life right now? why or why not?
Yes. I may not be the richest or the prettiest, or smartest or whatever, but I have a good family that loves me. I have good friends that support me and I have TXT and BTS to help me cope when things get overwhelming. I have a job that gives me a little bit of income (it’s not too common for college students here to get jobs like in the US, most of them just focus on acads) and all the means to continue my education amidst the pandemic. So really, I’m grateful for where I am now.

Why do you have to do me dirty cj,,,,, prolly online. I may not get to hug them or anything but I get to talk to them still. As may times as I want to. APA Monitor on Psychology, April 2018
NINETY PERCENT OF THE PATIENTS who seek treatment from Atlanta clinical psychologist Jennifer Kelly, PhD, are referred by a doctor, insurer or attorney. When they first come to her office, some are surprised to see she is African American. A few times, they have mistaken her white office manager for the clinician, thinking Kelly is "the help," she says. Others have been openly hostile: Early in her career, she recalls one patient refusing to work with her because she was black. "That’s a hurtful thing because it has nothing to do with your education and training, level of experience or the content of your character. It’s all about what you look like," Kelly says.
Erlanger Turner, PhD, a clinical psychologist in Houston and an assistant professor at the University of Houston—Downtown, faces a different brand of bigotry: ageism. He gets pushback from some of the parents of his young clients, who doubt his ability to treat their children. "I can’t control my physical appearance—I look much younger than I am, but I don’t think that should discount my competence and my experience," Turner says.
A psychologist with a less visible diversity status may face a different set of challenges. Lindsey Buckman, PsyD, a lesbian psychologist practicing in Phoenix, says that "most people assume everybody is heterosexual…and people say things when they feel like you are similar that they wouldn’t say if it was obvious that you are different."
While no formal surveys have measured the scope of the issue, anecdotally many psychologists report they have experienced discrimination from clients based on race, ethnicity, age, religion, sexual orientation or disability status. Many also regularly hear clients express prejudice about other groups during treatment. Bigotry directed at the practitioner can weaken the therapeutic alliance, while intolerance of other groups can negatively affect a client’s personal relationships, says Buckman.
Yet most practitioners receive little to no formal training for handling prejudice during treatment. Psychology programs often offer a single diversity course, says Huberta Jackson-Lowman, PhD, president of the Association of Black Psychologists (ABPsi).
"Unfortunately, in many institutions, this is still essentially a sidebar. You may have one lecture, one workshop, one training that people go to, and they assume that makes them culturally competent," she says. "We don’t talk a lot about these grayer areas, and how to navigate those in terms of our ethical responsibilities, but also in terms of our own safety," says Buckman. The only formal training she received during graduate school was when her supervisor helped her cope with sexual harassment from a client, and that "wasn’t even really training, it was essentially just crisis management," she says.
The result is that practitioners must learn how to handle prejudice from clients on the job, relying on supervision when possible to address individual cases.
"We don’t know exactly what to do in the room because this has not been part of our conscious collective thought process as a discipline, in terms of how we teach, train and supervise clinicians, and how we work ourselves," says Theopia Jackson, PhD, chair of the clinical psychology degree program at Saybrook University in Oakland, California, and president-elect of ABPsi. "So, we have to do our own science around what works and what doesn’t."
HOW TO HANDLE HOSTILITY
Jackson and other psychologists offer the following advice for confronting a bigoted or otherwise insulting patient:
▪ Be aware of your own internalized biases. Reflecting on their own social, cultural and political perspectives means practitioners are less likely to be caught off guard by something a client says. "It’s important for psychologists to be aware of what a client’s biases and prejudices are bringing up for them internally, so as not to project that onto the client—it’s important to really understand what’s happening," says Kathleen Brown, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist and APA fellow.
For Kelly, the Atlanta-based clinical psychologist, this means she’s careful not to assume that resistant clients are treating her disrespectfully because she’s African American. Sometimes her clients, who are referred for pre-surgical evaluation and treatment, are difficult or even hostile because their psychological intervention was mandated.
▪ Foster an open dialogue about diversity and identity issues. "The benefit of having that conversation, even though it can be scary or uncomfortable to bring it up in the room, is that it prevents it from festering or interfering with your ability to provide high-quality care to the client," says Illinois-based clinical psychologist Robyn Gobin, PhD, who has experienced ageism from patients. She responds to ageist remarks by exploring what specific concerns the client has regarding her age (like Turner, she looks young). If she’s met with criticism, she tries to remain receptive, understanding that the client is vulnerable and any hostility the client expresses reflects concern for his or her own well-being. By being open and frank from the start, she shows her clients the appropriate way to confront their biases in therapy.
Of course, practitioners approach these conversations differently. If a client makes a prejudiced remark about another group, Buckman says labeling the comment as "offensive" shifts the attention from the client onto her. "It doesn’t get to the core of what’s going on with them. In the long run, exploring a way to shift how the client interacts with the ‘other’ is probably more valuable than standing up for a group in the moment."
▪ Be straightforward. Kelly takes a direct approach—she often calls out biased comments in the moment—but does so in a lively manner that confronts the statement while accepting the patient. "If I don’t call out the microaggressions, they become a distraction and prevent me from helping the client manage with their medical condition," she says. "It may not be how other people would approach it, but it’s what works for me."
▪ Consider silence. Whereas some clinicians prefer to respond to prejudiced remarks directly, others find silence to be a powerful therapeutic tool. "Silence can be used extremely effectively," says Brown. "It allows the person to sit with the uncomfortable space, because what it does is bring up a patient’s anxiety." She says learned biases are comfortable for many people, but sitting quietly with those beliefs can start to raise questions about their validity. In that sense, silence can open up space for further dialogue and exploration.
▪ Tie your response to theory. When he experiences a bigoted statement, trauma psychologist Tyson Bailey, PsyD, says that he points to his training in dialectical behavior therapy, which helps provide the client with a framework for confronting their biases. He says patients voice stereotypes as a way of trying to simplify or understand other identity groups. Bailey responds by explaining to the client how judgments can heighten emotion and make it harder to think clearly, using this as a segue to begin a focused exploration of the judgment.
"It’s tough because sometimes I need to sit with someone who holds a different view than I do," he says. "I want to help people grow and recognize where bias is present, but I don’t believe it’s our job to change their views. It can be a problem if you lose the client in service of your own agenda."
Bailey says he’s had mixed success in tackling these issues during treatment. The conversations go poorly when he gets caught up in his own beliefs and his focus shifts away from the client. But when he’s stayed present, he finds there has often been a deepening of the therapeutic relationship; for many of his clients, it may be the first time they’ve had a safe space to explore the roots of their biases.
▪ Determine when to revisit the issue. Practitioners may want to further explore intolerant remarks when they are relevant to the patient’s treatment. For example, when one of Buckman’s clients frequently made racist and homophobic remarks, she encouraged her to consider what was driving that behavior, and how it might be affecting the client’s relationships.
Brown says she handles prejudice the same way as she would other unconscious beliefs. "My job is to help the person understand what’s underneath that belief, how they came to develop that belief and whether they choose to change that belief, if it’s creating stress in any way."
▪ Seek support. Regardless of the approach a psychologist uses to address bigotry, a key step is for him or her to seek support from supervisors or colleagues. "Repeatedly facing offensive remarks is painful, and it does chip away at you quietly if you try to hold all these experiences inside," says Gobin. "I think the most important thing someone can do is to share what they’ve experienced." Consulting with peers and supervisors not only provides social support, but also offers a forum to brainstorm and troubleshoot potential responses.
▪ Be cautious. Above all, clinicians should always feel safe before speaking up, understanding that power dynamics and privilege play a role in the therapeutic relationship. "It’s my job to hold whatever the client brings in the room, and that does mean some of the bigoted language," says Jackson. "However, it doesn’t mean that I have to be a punching bag. At no point does being a good therapist mean that you have to be abused in the moment."

This weeks political landscape has been a busy one, with the testimony of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Democratic debates being held within just seven days of each other. The Mueller testimony generally failed in its hope to be the democratic parties last hope to really sway public opinion on the special counsels report to favor impeachment inquiries. While he pointed to several issues that were “beyond problematic” and other concrete examples of obstruction of justice, public opinion remained unchanged. The same could be said about the lackluster debates among twenty presidential hopefuls. The field was still too wide to create a tension worth sitting on the edge of your seat over but the parties ability to shoot themselves in the foot remains an unfortunate burden that will never not frustrate. Thankfully, an insightful Elizabeth Warren pointed out this self-inflicted wound. “We are the democrats” she said proudly “We are not trying to take away health care from anyone, that’s the republicans.”
Senator Warren had a great point, but the meticulous details of a Medicare system overhaul deserves a fleshed out debate. “Medicare-For-All-Who-Want-It” Mayor Pete cleverly puts it while other members hash out fine line details about the relationship between the public and private sectors role in the health care of the American people. It’s a topic well-worth discussing, but it creates one of these disassociating black mirror-esque moments that are often symptomatic in the Trump presidency. We are debating scrupulous health care points with vigor and precise detail in a country ran by a leader who doesn’t even read legislation, never mind construct it. Even so the 2020 race will be close. Sometimes it hurts your head.
Donald J. Trump, despite all his incompetence, is undeniably a ruthless man. A true alpha male who frequently resorts to race baiting bully tactics to take as much attention away from the fact he is not up to the task of the job intellectually. Making the race as apolitical as possible gives him the playing field he’s most familiar with. When the conversation is about nothing Trump is at his best. He wants to talk about the size of his penis, not child care. Mastering the political tactics of hyperbole and branding have helped him keep the shtick going. Remember we are talking about a man who lost more money for 11 straight years than anyone in America and got elected president on his business acumen. If he’s anything, he’s in the running for the greatest con artist in human history.
For the record I essentially disagree with every political stance the president has taken. But I am far from the politically correct liberal who tries to pretend like he’s not even there to better their morning meditation class. I myself have become fascinated with Trump and his brazen unhinged Twitter behavior that makes me simultaneously laugh and cry. He talks so directly to his base on Twitter they are brainwashed into thinking that Donald is just another friend with similar nationalist ideas. His hilariously ignorant affability is often times the perk of my day. It’s a coping mechanism of mine. However, this week the tweets took a sinister turn. Racially motivated attacks were made against four minority women of congress. These unconstitutional attacks were widely condemned by everyone but Republican lawmakers. His devoted fan base threw fuel on the fire by chanting “Send them back!” loud and cohesively at the President’s very next rally. Trump stood there with his head held high basking in the bigotry. He ended the week with an attack on the city of Baltimore alluding that the 7th district is a place in which no human being would want to live. A city in his America.
I’m from a city in his America. The same one he is from actually. The same one Cardi B and AOC are from. (Which would make sending AOC back to where she came from hard to explain.) I try to stay informed- AOC clearly does her part- but some of the most poignant public support for democratic policies has been from rap superstar Cardi B, who once again released a statement of public support in regards to the four congresswomen just weeks after doing the same from Rep. Omar. It’s no secret Cardi B demands to be heard-but it’s not just her provocative bars and charismatic social media presence that’s doing the most good-it’s her actions.
Recently the Bronx native had a chance to interview liberal icon and presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders. The wide-ranging interview discussed topics of student loan debt cancellation, climate change, and social justice reform. Definitely not the most status quo duo in politics but the two of them together make for a good blend of entertainment and information that reaches a broad coalition of Americans. Their partnership is part of an outreach program to invigorate young voters. In a statement about the initiative Cardi said “Together, let’s build a movement of young people to transform this country.”
When it comes to that rhetoric, Cardi B more than backs it up. As early as 2016 Cardi openly endorsed Bernie Sanders in the Democratic Primary via Instagram, in 2017 she went on cogent stream of conscious asking the government poignant questions about where the hell our tax dollars go “I WANT RECEIPTS! I WANT RECEIPTS!” I Believe was the quote. Cardi also referred to FDR as the real MAGA president for his role in implementing social security, a post endorsed by Bernie himself. She criticized Trump on his government shutdown in January 2019 and has remained loyal to her support for Bernie.
Politics isn’t new to her and it sure isn’t a hobby, this is a passion of hers and her affinity with Senator Sanders is far from a novelty. Cardi B has known what’s been going on for quite some time now and telling you how she feels is not something she shies away from, its precisely why we love her. Her power lies in her shameless ability to tell the unsolicited truth and nothing but the truth in the bluntest way possible. In comparison this ranks just about evenly with the lack of veracity behind so many of the Presidents statements. The honesty of Cardi B may just be his kryptonite.
Cardi B has always been a musical outlet for the oppressed... hell an outlet for everybody- to let go of their current troubles put up their middle fingers and say fuck you to all their problems. Her music has acted as a subtle but poignant antithesis for the current political landscape. Her debut album Invasion of Privacy, especially the track Bodak Yellow, united people in various communities all across this country. ‘I Like It’ had a massive international impact. In modern day rap culture, you need something other than rapping ability to make it to ‘mogul status.’ Staying relevant in rap music is hard and public relations ingenuity is now required. It has that in common with politics-I think Cardi has discovered a lane outside the club in which she can and will do great things. Her story is one of self-belief and perseverance. One that advertises the need to do what we can to advocate for the disenfranchised so they can receive a platform. As democrats, we can work and will continue to fight for that platform, but for now…Listen to Cardi B- go get it yourself.

I’ve been having a hard time trying to cope with my trauma and find a way to express what has happened lately, because no, it hasn’t been dealt with, and yes it’s gotten worse.
So the group held a “meeting” where everyone talked about things they wanted to bring up. I missed it due to being out of country but I naively trusted whatever rules they came up with would be fair.
I’m glad I wasn’t able to go.
During the meeting, a member of Team C stood up and yelled that they didn't care what rules were made they were going to do what they wanted because they were paying money on all multiples of their accounts (which is against the ToS fyi). I'm told the "leaders" did nothing.
There is a member of Team A who is aiming to be nominated as their leader. Many people have expressed that Team A be allowed to vote for their leader, but the leaders of Team C and B said that it would be unfair to their teams because in the chat's infancy they were chosen by the person who made the server not voted.
I think if you think it's unfair, why not allow all teams to vote for their leaders? Or even hold an election every (whatever amount of time) so things stay fresh, and people don't get stuck in old ways, or tired. I mean if you still want to be leader, and people are satisfied with your work, then there's nothing to worry about? I mean if the problem *is* fairness after all.
Anyway this person was just super organized and came prepared, and I just think they make a good candidate. Not everyone would like to spend their spare time and energy playing mediator for a group of people playing a game. I don't think there's anything to lose if we have regular chances to change said leadership in the community.
During this meeting though, the "King" was welcomed to our community chat. Now, I understand nobody (except Niantic) can stop someone from playing Pokemon Go, and nobody can stop where they go on public property but I was willing to make the necessary sacrifices to avoid him wherever possible. I stopped playing in the town they live in, I stopped going on the chat for the town they play in, I changed my name, my team, even my chat account so nobody would tie me to the new account. I wouldn't attend a raid if it was small and there were members of Team C just in case it got back to the "King". Once, I even accidentally attended a raid with them (I wouldn't have gone if I had known they were attending) but thankfully it was large and I stayed ducked down in my car. They didn't seem to notice me (or maybe they had forgotten about me entirely? IDK. For me, it had been a traumatic event). So needless to say I was shocked when the "King" was added to the chat despite at least one of the leaders knowing what had happened and how I felt.
I explained how I felt to them again and was told it was to be inclusive to everyone, something about moving on, and how there's three truths to every situation.
It was incredibly invalidating. I felt I was being told that this leader (the one who I switched teams to) didn't believe me. I thought the very least that could've been done is that someone could've given me a heads up this was going to happen so I didn't find out casually in another chat. (I haven't typed in main chat since they joined).
Can I just say another reason why I like the candidate for Team A leader? They believe me. They're furious with what "King" did, and they hope they do it again to them because they said they'd have him thrown in jail for it. While I don't wish this to happen to anyone else, ever, I do appreciate the support, and being believed. I think there's a thing as being too neutral. I think one of the most important things you can do, while finding the truth (if that's your job), is to make sure the victim feels safe and validated.
Often times we get swept up in finding the truth in situations where it really doesn't matter. (like the internet, sorry, if a victim retells their story to you, you're not the detective on the case, if you question them or play devil's advocate, you're not helping anyone but yourself and your curiousity. If you can't offer validation, support, or understanding, then it's better left that you don't comment.) I understand that it is part of their responsibility to find out what happened, but at the same time, someone who is already a member of the community feels unsafe, that should be considered before adding the person that makes them feel unsafe. If you need to find the truth, I believe it should be done (and the air cleared) before adding them to the space.
I don't think they ever had acknowledged any wrong doing, and they certainly never apologized (they logged off the other town's chat in a huff when I refused to agree with their accusations). I mean it's trivial considering what they put me through, and I don't know if I would accept it, but I would understand if they had done this, and then the leaders spoke about moving on, giving people a chance to prove themselves, etc, but instead they weren't held to any kind of rules, or consequences for their actions (ie. not being allowed to join the chat). In fact none of Team C ever are if feels like and that's what makes it upsetting.
I would go on but I'm starting to feel sick from reliving all this.
Oh, as another note, someone from Team B was accused by the "King" of targeting them. Again, what I said previously, if you are in 90% of the town's gyms, inevitably you are going to get kicked out when people from the other teams decided to take over gyms. It would be a different case if you were in 10% and they only took you out of those gyms. Another thing that makes this utterly ridiculous is the "King" is known for having multiple accounts and golden berrying things multiple times from these multiple accounts, and knocking people out after 5 minutes despite it being advised against in the rules.
Apparently many people have been coming forward with complaints of the "King's" behaviour past and present, I don't know if it's solely in game or if there have been out of game encounters like mine, but people never bothered to mention it because there was nothing that could be done at the time since the "King" was not a member of the chat. (Niantic doesn't do anything despite harassment, and other things they've done being in breach of ToS. I've seen people email them with police reports and nada.)
One last thing I'd like to mention is when ever anyone tries to suggest a rule, or ask why consequences aren't being doled out to rule breakers, it keeps being said that we can't control how people play the game, or that it's impossible because not everyone is in the chat.. but... nobody is asking that you ban people from the game? Obviously that's out of everyone's control but Niantic's. All people are asking for is that if someone in the chat breaks a rule that you follow through and deliver the consequence (warning, ban, kick, etc) to that specific member. Being in the chat, being a part of the community is a privilege, why are we continuing to allow people who don't respect the rules (and the other members) the privilege of being in the chat? It shows there’s actually no consequences for breaking the rules, and if other people break the rules and do get consequences? Double standards.
(On a side note, anyone know what that specific fallacy is called?)

Self-Care Strategies When You Hate Your Job but Quitting is Not an Option

It was last summer when I began to feel a bit antsy as I had been in my position at work for over 4 years and felt it was perhaps time to move on. Fast forward a few months and I was about to start a new position, one that’s job description excited me. It was the opportunity to move up and on that I had been looking for after a few years of both stagnation and complacency.
Just a few days into my new position, however, something happened. I realized very quickly that the job description that excited me? Those job responsibilities were seemingly not unique to my role and would be either shared with or primarily managed by other colleagues who were more senior and really that I would be assisting my colleagues with all those tasks, that I essentially had no autonomous duties. I paused. Perhaps, I was too quick to rush to judgment. Perhaps, this was how they on-boarded people. Perhaps, it would get better or there would be an opportunity to not be what basically felt like an office assistant, a role I was certainly not looking for after leaving my previous position after many years.
That was November. It is currently April. Nothing has changed. In fact, it has gotten worse in the respect that I at times feel talked down to, treated as if I have no work experience, micromanaged. Sigh. While I figure out my next steps in terms of a new, better job opportunity, I need to rely on self-care in order to get me through these tough times. So what’s a W alum to do when trying to make it day to day in a not so ideal work environment (while simultaneously trying not to go down the life comparison rabbit hole)?
Here are some of my personal self-care tips:
1. TAKING LUNCH BREAKS – It is pretty much office culture in my current position for people to not take a dedicated lunch break, choosing instead to eat in front of their computers. I, on the other hand, take full advantage of my one hour unpaid lunch by breaking out of the office, grabbing lunch and not being surrounded by work. It is still apparently winter in New England some days (why??), so not many outdoors excursions yet but lunch time away from my desk is a great way for me to recharge and push through until the end of the (at times long long) day.
2. MUSIC – Music for sure has become a close personal friend particularly on lunch breaks but also at the end of the day on my commute home. Whether it is TLC’s greatest hits, reliving 1999 via N’SYNC and Britney Spears or listening to the iconic Cardi B’ s latest mixtape, zoning out and listening to some tunes is a great way for me to decompress.
3. GOOD FOOD – Forget diamonds, food really is this girl’s best friend. I am in no way suggesting turning to food in order to fill an emotional void, but sometimes when you’re feeling down a good meal is the best way to cheer yourself up. My go-to meal is tacos from my favorite spot Bernie’s Place, but I also love a good hamburger, some French fries, Thai food, or sushi for a little pick me up.
4. FRIENDS – Catching up with friends (and not ruminating over your work situation while doing so) is another way to just get my mind off work especially in a situation where I just do not jive with my colleagues. The sense of familiarity can be comforting when you feel out of place or not well integrated. Also, your friends can give some great advice sometimes without even knowing it. When I mentioned to one friend that I was trying to not beat myself for taking a less than great job, she reminded me that jobs are a crap shoot and that one can always end up in a place that is not a good fit. That instantly snapped me out of a bad place with just a simple remark.
5. LIMITING COMPLAINING - One thing that I found is that it is easy to dwell on the how terrible my job is to the point of talking about it incessantly. What helps me break that habit is complaining to myself or family member or friend for a delineated amount of time and then moving on. There is no point in pretending that working in an environment that’s wearing on you emotionally is not but it also is not healthy for me to talk about it for hours on end. If you find that your toxic environment is affecting other aspects of your life such as eating or sleeping, I would encourage you to seek professional help. I have and there is no shame in that.
6. MINDLESS TELEVISION – After a long day and then getting out the day’s frustrations, coming home to mindless television is a dream come true for me not only due to my work environment but also in the context of these political times. Some of my go-to favorites include The Real Housewives franchise, Southern Charm, RuPaul’s Drag Race, Say Yes to the Dress, and Catfish. I also enjoy reliving the good old days of watching daytime soap operas after school or during vacations by catching up on The Bold and the Beautiful and Young and the Restless at night.
7. CIVIC ENGAGEMENT – Staying involved in my local community has been a great way over the years for me to positively contribute to my hometown, meet new people and build my resume through unpaid work. This has come in the form of working on municipal campaigns, joining education justice activities and participating in park clean ups. This year is a municipal election year in my area ahead of 2018’s Congressional races so there is still an opportunity to be involved, engage in issues I care about and get my mind off work.
8. MAKING A PLAN – One thing that keep a down me down is not actively working toward improving my lot. So while I mull over what I want to do next and keep my eye open for new opportunities, I am learning to drive at 30 (!) and am trying to remind myself that right now is not forever.
9. ACCEPTANCE – I say this not because I am there but because it is something that would truly be in my best interest. Perseverating on what I questions I should have asked in the job interview that may have helped me make a better decision or thinking about the red flags I may have missed or kicking myself for complaining about a previous situation that was infinitely better than my current one is not helpful. Accepting that I am where I am and moving forward with the mentality of rectifying to get to the other side is self-care. It is not beating myself up because I made the best decision at the time based on what I knew it just did not work out. It was a learning experience for sure though in the sense of knowing what to ask or look for going forward. I also have to remind myself that I would not be learning to drive or looking to explore new cities outside of my hometown had it not been for this job. Looking for the silver linings no matter how small eases the tension of feeling like you made a huge mistake or are a failure.
10. SUNLIGHT – Finally, when all else fails, there is nothing like taking a walk in the sunshine whether while hiking or along the beach or simply in your neighborhood, feeling that warmth on your face and saying ‘it’s going to be OK’ as a form of caring for yourself.

If you’re anything like me, you may have wasted lots of energy over the years ‘worrying’ about things ahead of times and yet many of the things I worried about never actually happened…
How many of the things you worried about ACTUALLY happened in the way you thought they might?
Yes of course, some of the things we worry about do actually happen but did all the worrying in advance change it… probably not!
Did all the worrying ahead of time put us into a state of mind where we were best able to deal with the actual challenge?
For me, by the time I’d finished ‘worrying’ about what might happen, I was often ill prepared for the ‘challenge’ when it did happen.
How much better would it have been, if instead of spending precious time and energy worrying about all the things that may go wrong or why something shouldn’t happen, I’d spent time planning how best to deal with the challenge ahead and then taking some action to improve my confidence and skills, so that I was better prepared to ‘cope’ with the issue if it did arise?
We often spend so much time and energy worrying about what we ‘don’t want’ that we don’t have the energy left to plan for what we ‘do want’ don’t we?
Do you think when we waste time worrying about things that we don’t want to happen that we are more or less likely to live the life of our dreams?
Do we even have time left to know what our dreams truly are, after all the ‘time spent worrying’?
I’ve learned from years of experience, that worrying truly is a ‘useless emotion’…(it doesn’t always stop me doing it though – haha)… Why didn’t I listen to my mum when she told me this time and time again?
However, it’s never too late to change…..
If you’re a ‘worrier’, start to listen to the language you are using to yourself and others. Being aware of what you are saying either out loud or within your head is the first step to making the change needed to leading a life with less ‘worry’…
When something feels ‘impossible’ and you’re spending your energy ‘worrying’, STOP for a moment and take some time to write down what you’re worried about and then start to form a plan for what you can do to ‘reduce the risk of ‘it’ happening or to improve your own skills to enable you to deal with ‘it’ more confidently…..
Do you ever catch yourself saying things like…
“I can’t do that because .???……….. may happen…”
“I’m so worried about my exams, driving test, my job, my family, my relationship, money……..”
“I’m worried that I won’t be good enough… I’m not fit enough….. They’ll think I’m rubbish… I’m not strong enough… Pretty enough… Clever enough…..”
“I’m worried I won’t find anywhere to live… find the right job…. meet the right person….”
“I’m worried that I don’t know what I want to do with my life….
“I’m worried that if….. is elected that….”
“I daren’t ….buy a house …. change job ….. because there may be another banking crash…
“I can’t leave this abusive relationship because I’m worried that….”
If so, it’s time to take back control of the Negative Committee in your mind! The Negative Committee In Your Head
My mum had a great poem hanging on the back of the toilet door as a daily reminder to he about What’s the use of worrying… – Have a read – it will make you smile!
There are 2 categories of things we worry about:
Things that are within our sphere of control
Things that are outside our sphere of control
I eventually learned some better questions to ask myself and these questions massively reduced my ‘worrying’… They may help you too…
In future, when you catch yourself ‘worrying’ about something, try asking yourself:
“Can I do anything about this….?”
The answer to this question, will determine whether it is something within your sphere of control or not.
If it’s something you can’t control or influence, then it needs to be put to one side in your mind. Stop focussing on it and start to use your energy to take action on the things that are within your control…
If it is within your control, ask yourself:
“What is the worst thing that could happen if ….happened?”
Once you are clear on the worst case scenario, it’s possible to develop a ‘Plan B’ by asking yourself:
“How could I deal with (worst case scenario)???”
Write down a plan for how you could deal with the worst case scenario. Writing it down, helps focus your mind on the things you can do, rather than wasting precious energy just ‘worrying about it’…
Developing a ‘plan’ starts to bring a sense of ‘hope’… a feeling that it is possible to take some actions that would minimise the ‘risk’ of ‘it’ happening in the first place or that even if ‘it’ does happen, you have a strategy to deal with it.
Sometimes you may identify an ‘underlying root cause’ – for example, if you think “I may not get the job as a fitness instructor because I’m 5 stone overweight”, you’re underlying worry may be that you are feeling tired, unhealthy, overweight and generally unhappy with yourself. This in turn impacts on your ‘inner confidence’ and ‘outer body language’ and thus impacts on your success in interviews…
The underlying cause is often something within your control and therefore you can do something about it.
For example, if you’re worrying about not getting the job because “they might look at me and think I’m not ‘fit enough’… then take action to ‘get fit’ which will improve your confidence and thus improve your chances of getting the job..
You can also develop a ‘plan B’… Regardless of the outcome of the interview, I’ll continue to improve my health and fitness and I’ll do some additional training to improve my skills…
So here are my ‘Top Tips’ for reducing ‘worry’:
Develop a vision for the ‘best case scenario’ – What you want to happen rather than what you ‘don’t want’ to happen. What you focus on is often the outcome you will achieve…. You may find a ‘focus vision board’ helps to develop positive ideas around a specific goal or challenge… 5 Steps to Create Your ‘Focus’ Vision Board
Chunk the ‘problem’ down… Often, we build the problem up to be so enormous that we feel it’s impossible to do ANYTHING about it and therefore we don’t take any action. By breaking it down into smaller pieces, it’s possible to identify some small actions that can be taken. You’ll be surprised how quickly taking some small actions can start to significantly reduce ‘the problem’ you were worrying about…
Set yourself some SMART Goals (Specific goals that can be Measured, are Achievable and Realistic and have a Timescale to achieve them in) 8 Ways to Help Improve Your Confidence
TAKE ACTION… “A Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”….. When you take ‘positive action’, each little step is moving you forward toward what you want to happen and away from your ‘fears and worries’ and toward your ‘Door of Joy’…. How to Open Your ‘Door of Joy’ – You’re Holding the Key..
Before you fall asleep, ask yourself: “How can I improve this situation?” – our subconscious mind will set to work to find solutions to the problem… You’ll be surprised that over the next few days, ideas of what you can do to resolve the issue will start to pop into your mind.. write them down and start taking action!
Learn the art of relaxation/meditation/mindfulness – if you find yourself waking up in the middle of the night ‘worrying’, keep some headphones handy and put on a ‘relaxation’ or ‘hypnotherapy’ download – there are lots of ‘sleep meditations’ on YouTube that run for several hours… It’s amazing how much better you feel after a peaceful night’s sleep..
So to put our worries into perspective and as a ‘ghost driving a meat-coated skeleton’… what can we possibly be worried about – we’re already hurtling through space and we’re still here to tell our tales!

‘You really have to take things one at a time’

SANTA FE, N.M. — “I’ve always gravitated to public service,” said Joseph Maestas, who has spent more than 30 years working for the government and has served nearly 14 years in elected positions.
He’d like to extend that streak as the next mayor of Santa Fe.
“Now that we’ve gone from a stronger mayor form of government, I think it’s critical that someone gets the keys to City Hall and hits the ground running – someone with proven leadership,” said the former city councilor and mayor of Española, who was elected to the Santa Fe City Council in 2014.
When it comes to public service, he says he feels like he’s standing on the shoulders of his ancestors. His maternal great-grandfather, Jose Amado Lucero, was one of the signers of the state constitution when New Mexico joined the union in 1912 and one of the founders of Española.
A brief biographical sketch of Lucero in the archives of the Office of the State Historian indicates that he was a businessman in Mora County, Santa Fe, Santa Cruz and Española. He served as schools superintendent in Rio Arriba County and as a Santa Fe County commissioner and probate judge prior to becoming a member of the state House of Representatives.
“And his son, Alfredo Lucero, was a Santa Fe County commissioner and clerk,” he added. “I came from a family with deep roots in the area.”
Maestas’ father was a standout athlete and his mom a cheerleader at Santa Cruz High, where his dad later worked as a science teacher. The family also operated a liquor store and had a 2½-acre farm where they raised animals for slaughter.
“So I was exposed to a business environment, even though it was family owned, since a young age,” he said.
Santa Cruz High closed after Maestas’ freshman year, so he finished up at what became Española Valley High School in 1978, playing football, and running cross-country and track.

Maestas said he “had” to leave the state after he graduated the University of New Mexico with an engineering degree. The country was in recession, the private sector wasn’t hiring and the better jobs were with the government, he said. A 27-month internship with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration got his foot in the door. He earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Arizona State University while still working his day job. He worked in five states and Washington, D.C., before a Highway Administration job opened up in Santa Fe in 1996.
It was a difficult time in his life. He and his then-wife, who was originally from El Paso, had just lost a child during childbirth.
“We were devastated. We wanted to go back home,” he said.
The couple had a second child, Joey, who is now a senior at Texas State University majoring in communications.
Maestas has lived through tragedy. Years later, his father died during his campaign for mayor of Española.
“That was hard. He never did get to see me sworn in as mayor,” he said.
Maestas is going through another tough time. Last month, he took a break from his campaign to visit his sister, currently a cancer patient in Austin.

“My heart breaks for my mother because you’re not supposed to bury your children and she potentially could lose two children within a year’s time,” he said.
That’s because his brother Ben died last summer. Like their father, Ben had issues with alcoholism and he may have dabbled with drugs.
Ben died weeks after Maestas’ divorce from his second wife, U.S. District Judge Martha Vázquez, became final.
“I’ve learned that you really have to take things one at a time. When you lump it all together, the burden is much too heavy,” he said.
Maestas took a hiatus from government work during part of his term as mayor of Española from 2006 to 2010, where he was elected as a reformer. And in 2008, he ran for a Public Regulation Commission seat. But Jerome Block Jr. – whose PRC term was cut short by a scandal that included drug use and criminal charges for misuse of a state credit card and public campaign financing – won the seat.
Maestas took a job with the U.S. Census Bureau, then one as a division manager with the Bureau of Reclamation in Albuquerque. The commute from Española to the Duke City was too much, he said, so he didn’t run for re-election as mayor and moved to Santa Fe.
Maestas is building a home here that’s designed to accommodate his 88-year-old mother.
“She’s my best friend,” he said. “My goal is get my mom to live here. All her medical providers are here.”
Exercise has helped him cope with what life has thrown at him, too. The 57-year-old Maestas is a triathlete who usually makes the podium in his age group. Campaigning has cut into his training time. But he still manages to get in a workout nearly every day, be it a three-mile run, a 1,000-meter swim or a 30-mile bike ride.
The routine doesn’t just help him physically, it helps his him mentally. “When I exercise, I’m able to really think through things,” he said. “I can not only sort through whatever I’m dealing with, but I have better clarity navigating through it.”

I would encourage more affordable housing by issuing bonds as a permanent funding source; developing a sustainable city support (land donations, etc.) plan for tax credits; incentivizing higher density developments; funding programs in the capital improvement plan; and addressing Tierra Contenta’s infrastructure needs. With almost 100% apartment occupancy and approximately 2,000-4,000 additional units needed, I support more context-sensitive apartment developments. 4. I also support its use as a post-production facility and film school to support an expanding film and digital media industry while leveraging its broadband system.
5. Do you support the city’s living wage ordinance – which currently sets the minimum wage at $11.09 per hour – and its mandatory annual cost of living increases?
Yes. As Santa Fe city councilor, I sponsored Resolution 2014-103 to strengthen the enforcement of the Living Wage Ordinance. This led to the enactment of Ordinance 2014-38 that requires businesses to self-certify their compliance prior to receiving a business license, and improves notification when the consumer price index is released and determines changes to the living wage.
6. Did you vote in the May “soda tax” election? If so, did you vote for or against it? Please explain your vote or your opinion of the failed tax proposal.
I voted against the soda tax in the May election. I support more pre-K funding, but did not support a wasteful, $80,000 special election. The unwillingness of soda tax advocates to work with the beverage industry and their efforts to make it a moral imperative doomed the effort. It was government over-reach in the absence of public trust.
7. Should the city continue to grant a permit and provide police support for the annual Entrada event held on the Plaza that is opposed by Native Americans and others?
